Foster City is a quiet, planned suburban city located off of Highway 101, about 20 minutes south of San Francisco and 30 minutes north of San Jose. Known as one of the safest cities in the United States, it covers a total area of 19.8 square miles, and over 30,000 residents call it home. Foster City was founded in the 1960s on an engineered landfill in the marshes of the San Francisco Bay on the east edge of San Mateo.
Foster City is home to four public schools in the San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District. Foster City Elementary, Brewer Island Elementary, and Audubon Elementary serve grades K-5. Nathaniel Bowditch Middle School serves grades 6-8. All have won California Distinguished School Awards. The city also offers several private preschools and elementary schools, including the Ronald C. Wornick Jewish Day School (K-8) and Kids Connection (K-5). The separate San Mateo Union High School District serves high school age students.
An outdoor enthusiast’s dream, Foster City strives to build a great community through people, parks, and programs. In addition to its temperate climate, Foster City boasts 24 parks spanning over 200 acres dotted with public tennis and basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, dog exercise areas, picnic facilities, bocce courts and rollerblading/biking trails along the San Francisco Bay. Foster City is also distinguished by an extensive 218-acre enclosed man-made lagoon system. Along the lagoon, enjoy world-class windsurfing and kite surfing, as well as a 9-hole golf course and driving range adjacent to Mariner’s Point. Various rowing clubs, a newly constructed Teen Activities Center, and a concrete skate park add to the community’s exceptional resources for an active lifestyle.
The Parks & Recreation Department offers a wide variety of sports and activities for residents from preschoolers to seniors. The Public Amphitheatre and the historic Hillbarn Community Theatre support the arts, offering a vibrant calendar of events and performance classes. The thriving Cultural Arts Program includes an Art Gallery, Art & Wine Festival, writers contest, photo contest, community chorus, and several cultural celebrations throughout the year.
Headquarters to hot startups and multinational companies like Visa, Foster City maintains a cutting edge vibe enhanced by several modern office buildings situated along the lagoon.
It’s no wonder that Money Magazine named Foster City as one of the Best Places to Live! , and Forbes ranked it #10 on their 2009 list of America’s Top 25 Towns to Live Well
